Batman V Superman has owned the box office since it came out Easter weekend, and with April’s underwhelming list of movies it could be there for a while. However a couple movies from two very different styles are coming out this weekend, that could satisfy the thirsty movie goers in the drought that is April.

The Boss is a movie you feel like you’ve seen before, because it’s a familiar concept. Melissa McCarthy producing her usual brand of comedy that audiences have begun to grow tired of. She stars across from Kristen Bell and the trailers show scenes that have potential to be very funny. If the overall vibe that critics reviews are giving off is correct (18% on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this posting), then McCarthy carries the movie that has very little plot or room for the rest of the cast. While critics disagree with the direction McCarthy isn’t far removed from the success she enjoyed with Spy, which may be enough to drive audiences to see this so-so comedy.

Hardcore Henry looks like one of the freshest takes on an action movie since the first Expendables (hopefully it’s not ruined by sequels like the Expendables franchise),  and the critics have actually come out in support of this P.O.V. action movie. Hardcore Henry is certified fresh at the time of this posting, which is a difficult feat for most action movies outside of Marvel. The first-person gimmick is enough to impress critics, but ideas like this can be very hit or miss with audiences. New ideas are rare in modern cinema, with more remakes being made every day.

I wouldn’t put money on either of these movies passing Batman V Superman in the box office this weekend, but if I had to pick one (I can’t say it enough, April is a wasteland) I’d pick The Boss. I believe Hardcore Henry will prove over time to be the better of the two, and ultimately Melissa McCarthy’s career will leave this title in the dust. It just seems audiences will take something they know, despite terrible reviews (see Batman V Superman) over something newer that they are unsure of. With a decent showing at the box office this weekend I look for Hardcore Henry to have more success in the second weekend, after moviegoers can pick the brain of their friends that were brave enough to try something new. Do you think either will overcome Warner Bros. March blockbuster? Let us know in the comments.
